Mexico

I really don’t know what is it with us…. We might have quetzal feathers, the will of the “Pipila”, the courage of Zapata or maybe some Aztec spirit living inside of us… I only know that we are Mexicans.

32 years ago, maybe you weren’t born…just like me. But I´m positive that you have heard of how it was that they and seen some pictures of what happened that obscure day in the 1985 earthquake. Yeah, it might have been one of the darkest days, but it didn’t last…. ¡Because I can tell you… that is Mexico “chingao”! We fight against darkness.

Something similar happened in 2017, the darkness didn’t last. “Mexico… mi México lindo y querido” didnt stand on the sidelines, we went out to overcome this catastrophe. Help was everywhere, so much that at one point the Red Cross ask us to stop sending help because it was “too much”. Water, tuna, boxes filled with personal hygene articles, influencers spreading valuable information, social media filled with positive vibes and desire to help.

Clearly this was a reminder of what happened 32 years ago, but the people reacted exactly the same… with the solidarity that characterized us MEXAS! (slang for Mexicans) With a love for helping without expecting nothing in return, just looking for a brother that can use some help.

¿Heroes without a cape? I really don’t like that phrase, because for a Mexican the cape is our flag, that flag that appears in every picture and one never knows who might have brought it, but the flag is there. The flag that you can see in every look of the people volunteering, the topos, police men, soldiers and even in the eyes of our dogs.

During this tragedy I heard “We really do not deserve dogs” and actually I agree. My eyes filled with tears every time I repeat the phrase. So many doggy friends helping, looking between pieces of concrete for any sign of life and saving so much people of a inminent death. But after watching some videos and pictures I realize that we Mexicans don’t do exceptions of people and we don’t make exceptions of nothing and clearly not for our animals. Lots of doggies were rescued by volunteers and topos, social media making everything in their power to share the pictures of the missing doggies in order to find their families.

Not only I am super proud of being a Mexican, I truly like to show it to the world. At the same time I would profoundly like to thank every country that came to Mexico to help us. So many country friends that it really made me think that Mexico is the best friend of the world. Thank you my friends, thank you global family, this makes me actually and truly feel like a GLOBAL CITIZEN.

Is inevitable that the help does not stops, it is not only to pick up the concrete, swipe of the dirt and fill warehouses  with food. Now the hardest part is coming, but also the most exciting. We have now the power to build up a Mexico for us, for all. It is time to help our compatriots with the greatest gift we can give them, returning their homes back even stronger. I truly know that we can make it, and that we are going to lift Mexico.

Lets keep on helping with the most organize way possible, if right now there are so much people helping… keep calm you will be needed in the future. Look for your best moment to put your piece of sand and never turn your head away from this event.

I know that the world knows Mexico as a country that receives everyone with open arms and is true. But right now, on this days I realize that we don’t just open our doors to everyone but actually our people comes first. We will never put our back to a brother, we will never forget the event and love that created… Mexico I love you, I am blessed to be a Mexican God bless Mexico. ¡Viva Mexico!
