Just being at the Riviera Maya is wonderful, blue sky and the magnificent ocean.
But do not forget about Akumal! This place will amaze you with wonderful corals, amazing beach, palm trees and the main attraction you can watch sea turtles in the wild.
This is not a common place to go but take note, if you go in the heavy season you better walk through the main entrance of the beach and walk some meters away and you will definitely find a great spot with less people.
Fan of sea turtles!? Akumal is the best place to watch sea turtles eating. This spot has a lot of algae and sea grass and turtles find this meal, amazing!

With a lot of corals and reefs, the guides put on a path of buoys where you can snorkel and look for some turtles.
*Tip: If you have your own mask/googles and snorkel you better take them with you. It is approximately $100 pesos to rent the equipment(Mask/snorkel & lifevest). You might think is not very expensive, but there is a trick. If you only rent/or have your own equipment the guides will not let you in the first buoys path.
There is a second buoys path, we swam all around the path and we couldn’t find any turtles. Plus there is a lot of corals and reef so you have to be extremely careful not to step on it or get stung by a sea urchin.
So, the best idea is to bring your own equipment and pay the guide and enter through the first buoys path where you will definitely watch some sea turtles eating.
After swimming through the path (its a long one), you can stop by any of the restaurants where you can eat some super fresh sea food.
Akumal “attractions”, by these we mean the rent of the equipment, paddle boards, close at 6:30-7 pm and if you want to eat something you will have to order at the restaurant before 7 pm. After this hour the kitchen closes and you will only get some hours of drinks 😉
