¡Matanga, dijo la changa!
This is Mexican slang for “Ha! This is now mine” It literally translates to “Matanga, said the she-ape”. Weird, but it works.
A couple of weeks ago, we went to Chilango Post to enjoy some good vibes and photograph one of our favorite bands, Blondet. And that’s exactly where we found some incredible pieces of Mexican design.
Amongst them, Changas O Mangas.
This Mexican design brand only wants one thing:
“For you to look chulo when you go outside.”
Chulo means handsome, good-looking, striking. Like, dayum.
Whilst their motto is basically this: “If life turns its back on you, slap it on the ass.”
Which actually isn’t such a bad idea. You know, karma and all.
So, between t-shirts starring Mexican historic characters such as Benito Juárez, Porfirio Díaz, Emiliano Zapata and Maximilian of Habsburg (all pimped out with hipster glasses and Lakers caps), we found the famous and oh-so-Mexican Lotería series.
La Sirena, El Borracho, La Bota, El Diablo. Which is to say, The Mermaid, The Drunkard, The Boot, The Devil
And of course, La Saaaaaandía.
Which means “The Watermelon”, in case you didn’t get it.
(I absolutely LOVED this shirt. And the fact that watermelon is one of my favorite fruits had NOTHING to do with it.)
There’s nothing better than finding such a special and essential piece of Mexico, a game we all remember playing with little raw beans (if you’re unsure what this means, ask a Mexican).
This new brand hands out its clothing wrapped in banana leaves and jute bags, all tied up in an enchanting manner.
In my personal opinion, aside from helping a Mexican brand move forward, these shirts are amazing.
After all, who doesn’t want to win the lottery?
