Gustavo Tella is an American football fan. Or perhaps, we should say sensation.
The Mexican coach and TV sports commentator had his first encounter with football at the age of twelve.
The person who motivated him the most was his uncle Alfonso, who was the first to take him to a football field.
He’s played in UAEM’s Potros Salvajes, ITESM’s Campus Toluca Borregos Salvajes and finally, he’s played professionally in NFL Europe, in Düsseldorf Rhein Fire and Berlin Thunder.
“Football helped me become who I am today in every way.”
“[It] provided me with a lot of tools that helped me achieve everything with discipline, even when I was a little guy. The fact that it’s a team sport helped me to accomplish different objectives in my life. Plus, I think this skill is fundamental in any thing you do.”
“I have always tried to surround myself with people with the same objectives and philosophy as me, just like the brotherhood you get when playing football.”
One particular team that marked me as a football player was Borregos Toluca, a team I love and owe many wonderful experiences I lived in that particular stage of my life.
This play is the one I’ll always remember. It was the result of a lot of team effort, and also the one that made me realize the potential I had, what I really loved doing, and my love and respect for the best sport ever, football.
Football is what led him to play thrice in the Mexican National Team, he was awarded the title of “Best Receiver” in Mexico in 2004, and is one of the 17 Mexican players that migrated to NFL Europe.
Playing in Europe taught him how much effort a player needs to make in order to become a professional player at the NFL.
After that, he coached at his almar mater, and later went on to became Head Coach in Valencia, Spain.
He states that being able to share his experiences with young athletes at the highest level in Mexico was amazing.
“To be able to coach became represents more than work, a passion in itself for me.”
“I hope that my coaching will not only make them better players, but also better people.”
So what’s next for Gustavo Tella?
He now has a bright career in ESPN – a great opportunity where he can live a dream he always had. To give his opinion and perspective on this beautiful sport in a internationally broadcasted program feels great! No doubt, it is a challenging task in my professional life but also very important for my personal growth.
Lastly, he would like to thank each and every person who has supported him in his professional career.
