It’s not everyday you meet a modern band that’s a cross between classic rock & roll and vintage blues.
But today is that day.
Meet Johnny Velvet, a band made up of extremely talented 20-year-olds from Mexico City. Gabriel Melgarejo, Carlos Lozada, Andrés Bonet, Alonso Lavin and Montserrat Arduna.
We had the honor of interviewing Gabriel Melgarejo, guitar and vocals, who first started out with classic and flamenco guitar.
“For me, music is a language that goes beyond any verbal meaning. It communicates the most intimate part of man.”
Johnny Velvet started out in 2015 with Gabriel and Carlos, who decided to create their first album, Guess Mama Don’t Know.
And believe it or not, this very album took one year to finish because Carlos was living in Barcelona, so it was done long distance.
Once Carlos returned to Mexico, everything was ready to launch.
Inspired by the classic beats of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Miles Davis and Charles Mingus, the band found a style of its very own.
“We believe the best way to listen to our music is just hitting PLAY.”
In a few words, Johnny Velvet is basically fear, a little heroine, and caffeine.
“Guess Mama Don’t Know was written and produced for ourselves. What’s coming next is for the world.”
Check out a few of their amazing beats:
You can also check them out in Spotify, iTunes, Apple Music, and Deezer.
Vintage, blues, rock, roll and one hell of a kick.
Currently, they’re starting to produce their next album, where the entire band has songs written specially for them, aside from live shows in different venues across Mexico City.
