One perhaps wouldn’t expect to find a small medieval and walled up town high in the mountains of Tuscany. But there is one, and it is wonderful.
San Gimignano is a mere 35 minutes by car from Florence, and it’s worth every second of the trip.
It’s famous for its medieval arquitecture, specially its beautiful towers.
The historical center of the town is an UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1990.
In the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, it served as a stopping point for the Catholic pilgrimage towards Rome and the Vatican.
We guarantee you wouldn’t mind making a stop here…
There are four main squares in this lovely town: Piazza della Cisterna, Piazza Duomo, Piazza Pecori, and Piazza delle Erbe.
Walking around you’ll find lots of things to see: from endless vineyards and green countryside to incredible little quaint shops.
One of the main souvenirs: Pinocchio.
You also might get to meet the coolest dog in town!
And don’t forget: one of the main highlights of the city is its *AMAZING* gelato!
This one is limoncello and vinsanto e cantuccini!!! Limoncello is a delicious liquor you need to try while you’re in Italy, while vinsanto is a famous dessert wine sold in this region, which is mostly always accompanied by cantuccini, a delicious Italian cookie.
You can climb up its amazing towers for breathtaking views.
Or just chill in one of its quaint and lovely streets and squares.
I mean, there’s even a well.
A real life well!
San Gimignagno is definitely a stop worth making on your way to Rome, or you know, wherever 🙂
With its lovely stone corridors, quaint buildings, antique churches and beautiful piazzas, this medieval town will lock unto your heart and never let it go <3
Keep on rolling ‘til you find something you love…
